Strong challenge from Android smartphone makers like Samsung and Xiaomi has pushed Apple down from the top position in the smartphone market. The latest data from research firm IDC has shown that Apple’s smartphone shipments fell by about 10 percent in the first quarter of 2024.
Global smartphone shipments increased by 7.8% to 289.4 million units between January and March, with Samsung having the highest market share of 20.8%. That means Samsung has now come to the top position.
According to the report, Apple had shown great strength in the last quarter of 2023. It left Samsung behind and became number-1. Now Apple’s market share has come down to 17.3% and it is in second position. Huawei’s market share has increased in the first quarter of 2024.
Xiaomi is at third position, which has captured 14.1% market share. According to the report, Samsung has benefited a lot from the Galaxy S24 series. Earlier this year, the company had launched a new smartphone series. It has shipped 60 million phones in these three months.

Counterpoint’s report has already stated that global sales of Galaxy S24 smartphones have increased by 8% in the first three weeks of sales as compared to the Galaxy S23 series launched last year.
According to IDC, Apple shipped 50.1 million iPhones in the first three months of this year, which is less than the 55.4 million units sold during the same period last year. Sales of iPhones have declined in China. There has been a decrease of 2.1% compared to last year.
For Apple, China is one of its biggest markets. The decline in sales of iPhones there is a matter of concern for Apple. The ongoing tension between America and China is not hidden from anyone. While America tightened its grip on many Chinese apps, China has also banned its employees from using iPhones in its offices and offices of private companies.
